6 Ways to Show More Gratitude Every Day

Gratitude has been shown to create a positive attitude which leads to better overall health. It can help fight stress and even boost the immune system. Showing gratitude helps you and everyone around you. It cultivates an optimistic attitude that attracts people and builds healthy relationships. Here are a few ways you can show a little more gratitude each day.

 

1. Look for Ways to Do a Kind Act

It’s not that people don’t want to be kind, but it’s easy to get so caught up in the daily affairs that we might not see the needs of others. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference. As you’re leaving for work, toss your neighbors’ newspaper onto their porch so that it doesn’t get wet in the rain. Hold the door open for the person behind you as you enter your workplace. Polish your spouse’s shoes before leaving for work. Kind acts help others to feel your gratitude and appreciation.

 

2. Say “Thank You”

Don’t text or email it. Either find the person you want to thank and do it in person or pick up the phone to call them. A face-to-face ‘thank you’ will have more meaning because it took more time than texting or emailing. The person will also have the benefit of seeing your face and facial expressions which can add to the depth of your message.

 

3. Write a Handwritten Note

In today’s fast-paced world, time is a gift. A handwritten note shows that you’ve taken time out of a busy schedule for someone else. It can be a thank you note or a letter letting someone know you’ve been thinking about them. It’s a personal, thoughtful way to express gratitude to friends, family, and even co-workers.

 

4. Leave No Trace

This common hiking phrase has meaning outside of the mountains. Picking up after yourself shows respect for others. At work, you can keep your personal office space clean and wipe down your area in the break room. You can show the same kind of gratitude and respect at home by helping with tasks you wouldn’t have before. Look for something your spouse usually does like load dishes in the dishwasher and do it without fanfare.

 

5. Volunteer Your Time

Do you have a place you love to spend time that could use your help? Local libraries, museums, hospitals, or animal shelters are usually looking for volunteers. Volunteering can be a way to give back and show appreciation to the people of your community.

 

6. Be Genuine and Sincere

Your expressions of gratitude need not be significant, but they should always be genuine and sincere. You should only express appreciation when it’s genuinely felt. It’s not unusual to go through times when it’s hard to be grateful. But if you can find even one small thing to be thankful for and express it sincerely, it will get easier.
